By raising awareness on law enforcement and justice issues, the CPA promotes community safety. The CPA has contributed to the deliberations on such issues as youth criminal justice; child pornography; impaired driving; sentencing, corrections and parole reform; national sex offender registry; criminal pursuits; organized crime; and technological innovation in policing, such as DNA testing and the Canadian Police Information Centre renewal project. The CPA has designed the Cops for Kids Safety program (copsforkidssafety.com) to help our teachers and parents give our children the tools to Be Smart and Be Safe in our world today.
Online Safety
In today’s digital world, it is important that you as a parent become just as cyber savvy as your kids. With all the stories of cyber abuse and internet predators out there, it is easy to get spooked. But hold on, before you decide to disconnect your internet, take the time to learn how to spot these potential threats and what you can do to prevent them. Make sure your children understand which web sites are acceptable and which are off limits. Place the computer in the family room or kitchen so you can see what your children are viewing. Set a time limit for how long they can spend on the computer. The Cops for Kids Safety program will educate your children to help keep them cyber safe.
Safety in the Home
The number of children seeking medical attention each year because of home injuries is alarming. There are steps that can be taken to ensure the safety of your home and to reduce the risk of injury. It is important that children are educated to recognize potential safety hazards and what to do if they see them. The Cops for Kids Safety program is educating students and their families about how to spot home safety hazards, and what to do to avoid and prevent them.
Interactive in School or at Home
Teachers and parents play an important role in guiding children of all ages in different steps to personal development. The Cops for Kids Safety program has been designed as an interactive learning tool that will guide them through a series of real life skill tests to educate them on how to spot dangers before an injury occurs.
